The Beginning and Shared Vision
My co-founder Carrie and I have been close friends since university. Together, we’ve navigated the hardships and joys of entrepreneurship. Before founding H.PAI, I ran an advertising agency, while Wu spent many years working in fashion e-commerce. We noticed that many bags on the market either belong to fast fashion——wasting resources and lacking sustainability or high-end luxury brands with prohibitive prices. I remember after an uninspiring shopping experience where we walked through the mall without finding anything worthwhile, Carrie said, "Why can’t we create bags that combine aesthetics and practicality, balancing both work and life, allowing people to enjoy beauty while staying grounded in their daily lives?" And thus, our brand HPAI was born.
Do less, let it be
As pragmatic idealists, we took immediate action. I was responsible for product design and production, while Wu handled the online operations. Always advocates of minimalism, we didn’t want to do anything unnecessary in any aspect.
Design：H.PAI focuses on whether a bag's size, capacity, and portability are suited to its intended use. In a design meeting, we were discussing the internal structure of a new handbag. Someone suggested adding multiple small pockets for organization, but I firmly said, "No, thoughtful design isn’t about cluttered compartments and pockets. We want to give space back to the user, allowing them more freedom." Hence, we designed a work bag large enough to fit a laptop and an evening bag that holds essentials like makeup and a phone. We focus on real needs, not creating storage anxiety, and avoid excessive design.
Materials: we understand the importance of sustainability. We chose to use natural materials like genuine leather to make our bags. Leather, as a natural material, has incomparable advantages: it’s durable, Luxurious touch, and when tanned using eco-friendly methods, it minimizes environmental impact while ensuring the safety and comfort of our products. Unlike most synthetic materials, natural materials can naturally decompose, avoiding the long-term pollution caused by synthetics.
